@DanaMcFarland @pabinkley @ryregier @redlibrarian I can recall one vendor who provided a login form we could host on our site that had a username/pwd embedded in a hidden input field. That would have been late 90s.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Tue Sep 25 00:29:07 +0000 2018)

@redlibrarian @DanaMcFarland @pabinkley @ryregier They used newlines to make the page really long, and put the username and password at the bottom of the page, so it wouldn’t be immediately visible if you did a view source. Security, so important.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Wed Jul 03 22:41:52 +0000 2019)

The federal Department of Communications was so impressed by this graphic they gave Bill a $25,000 Norpak workstation which a whole bunch of different artists wound up using to create Telidon artworks, first at Trinity Square Video and later at Toronto Community Videotex

(Originally on Fowl Place: Wed Jul 03 22:46:35 +0000 2019)

And this is just one of ~7500 Telidon graphics files recently recovered from 86 8-inch floppy disks in the @InterAccessTO archives. Lots of fun ahead.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Fri Aug 30 01:15:41 +0000 2019)

@adr Hmm. When we hosted SubjectsPlus it was run by the same 2.25 folks in Library systems responsible for the ILS, DSpace, OJS, Library website & intranet, CONTENTdm, SFX, Metalib, etc. Was not possible to provide same level of support as vendor focussed on a single product.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Sat Sep 07 17:16:42 +0000 2019)

@daskey @adr That is an important question. Many of the applications (or equivalents) on that list are now run by UVic Systems or by vendors. My current thinking on where local hosting adds value centres around 1. Long term stewardship and 2. avoiding vendor lock-in.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Sat Sep 07 18:08:24 +0000 2019)

@daskey @adr I would argue we add value to all of the applications we host, since hosting adds value whether local or cloud. More of a question of whether local hosting represents the best allocation of resources possible in each case. Too many variables for one approach to always be right.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Sat Sep 07 18:36:38 +0000 2019)

@DanaMcFarland @adr Agreed. I’m pretty neutral on Libguides; don’t use it myself but other folks find it works for them, and it barely impacts my department, so why would I object? Springshare’s tech support has been quite good the few times I’ve communicated with them.

@PeterSheltonTV @n1ckfg @ShortFormErnie @InterAccessTO While it was mainly vector graphics, NAPLPS had a rarely-used “incremental point” feature the standard describes as “a string of color specifications that are deposited in a raster-sequential manner.” I believe this picture of Grace Jones by R. Fisher is an example:

(Originally on Fowl Place: Mon Jun 07 02:52:40 +0000 2021)

@n1ckfg @ShortFormErnie @InterAccessTO I’m definitely not an authority on that. I know there was a thing called the North American Broadcast Teletext Specification (NABTS) that could encode NAPLPS and other things in the vertical blanking interval https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NABTS

(Originally on Fowl Place: Mon Jun 07 02:58:30 +0000 2021)

@n1ckfg @ShortFormErnie @InterAccessTO but I’m not sure how much NAPLPS was used in that context.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Mon Jun 07 03:04:40 +0000 2021)

@n1ckfg @PeterSheltonTV @ShortFormErnie @InterAccessTO In theory, I think NAPLPS might have been capable of that … but in practice, I don’t think anyone ever implemented more than a 4 bit color map, so it was never possible to display more than 16 colors at the same time. The palette was as you say quite customizable though

(Originally on Fowl Place: Mon Jun 07 03:22:23 +0000 2021)

@ShortFormErnie @PeterSheltonTV @n1ckfg @InterAccessTO Sounds about right! Wikipedia tells me CD+G was 4 bit colour also

@LordSiBorg According to an article in the Times (June 15, 1989) prior to 1984 WI made printers for BBC schools and sold printers to British Telecom. Then their managing director Ron Brand read about PC clones in a US magazine, following which WI entered that market in 1985.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Sat Jun 12 19:10:20 +0000 2021)

@LordSiBorg They produced AT & XT clones at 40% of IBM prices. They were the first British company to take out an IBM patent license, so they paid royalties to IBM rather than risk a lawsuit.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Sat Jun 12 19:12:47 +0000 2021)

@LordSiBorg That proved to be quite profitable. In 1987 they were sold to Williare plc. By 1989 they were selling laptops and 386 machines.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Sat Jun 12 19:14:26 +0000 2021)

@LordSiBorg Interestingly, the only reference I can find to “Williare plc” is that same article, not sure what that means. Possibly “Williare” is a typo?

@adr Did up my recent study leave report in emacs org mode converted to LaTeX and yep, I think it’s the best looking thing I’ve ever written. Also way easier to do numbered sections, footnotes and that sort of thing.

(Originally on Fowl Place: Fri Nov 12 17:22:00 +0000 2021)

@adr And appearance is everything!

That said, if your report covered the same things as your Access prez I think “absolute flaming garbage” might be a wee bit harsh :-)

@ShortFormErnie To be fair, I would pay money to hear the Chipmunks cover Anarchy in the UK. But I’m guessing that wasn’t on the album

@adr Season 5 def. had a different feel to it as everyone went in separate directions. New bad guy was perhaps a bit one dimensional. Still pretty good though.

@lproven Unicode support is a definite improvement over Gopher, and encryption is a big plus for some folks. Also simplifies markup. That said I’m not completely sold on Gemini, but I do think it’s an interesting effort

Anyone know where to source early versions of Peter Scott’s groundbreaking Internet directory program, HyTelnet? I’ve found version 6.9 on http://www.devili.iki.fi/pub/IBM/PC/packet/ but I’d be really interested to see versions from the very early 90s. (I am aware of the web version at floodgap)

Yep, version 1.1 from (I think) 1990. As you’d expect, quite a difference from 6.9, released in 1995
